For todays World Public Transport Day, our developer Moritz has created a great walk-through to show you how easy it is to edit public transport lines in Tramola and run case studies with the agent-based transport simulation MATSim. Implementing the proposed extension of a tram line in Paris, adding transit stops and adding network links for the simulation, becomes a breeze with Tramola’s easy to use editing capabilities.

Tramola and MATSim enable transport planners to quickly find the best solution before major and expensive infrastructure work is performed.

3D Visualizer

The Visualizer now supports a fully 3D perspective on your simulation area.

Display 3D buildings to give your network a real-world sense of place
Customize building colors to match your preferred visual style
Tilt and rotate the map freely for the best viewing angle
Vehicles are now rendered as 3D car models, making traffic flow easier to follow at close zoom levels

Combined with the new basemap settings sidebar, you have full control over how your simulation world looks.

Visualization Presets

Setting up the perfect visualization — colors, widths, attribute mappings — takes time. Now you can save it once and reuse it whenever you need it.

Save presets capturing the full visualization context
Organize presets into folders for easy navigation
Visualization settings are persisted in the database, so they survive across sessions

No more re-configuring your visualizer every time you open a run.

Scenario Export

Slurm & SSH Runners

Running simulations on HPC clusters is now a first-class feature in Tramola.

Configure CPU cores, output file patterns, and the MATSim main class per job

Whether you’re running locally, on a remote server, or submitting to a Slurm queue — Tramola handles it.

Network Filters in the Visualizer

You can now filter the network directly in the Visualizer by link attribute values — for example, show only links of a certain road type or speed range. Filters respect the attribute type, so numeric and categorical attributes are handled appropriately.

This release empowers users to edit scenarios with even more confidence and efficiency — introducing a time–distance plot, batch edit features for transit data, and built-in validation routines for network edits.

Network Validations

When editing a network in MATSim, many things can go wrong. Tramola now helps you spot mistakes early:

Detect source or sink links that could cause MATSim to crash after deleting or adding links
Identify erroneous attribute values such as zero length, capacity, lanes, or free speed

Now, introducing structural changes to your simulation network is more reliable and effortless.

Network Plausibility

Automatically converted networks are a great starting point for MATSim simulations — but it’s often worth checking whether network attributes are plausible.

Tramola now includes automated plausibility checks to help you identify suspicious sections in your network:

Speed on succeeding links – adjacent links should have similar speeds
Speed on opposing links – speeds between opposite directions should be consistent
Speed vs. lanes – low-speed links rarely have more than one lane

Transit Time–Distance Plot

A single transit line can easily comprise 30+ individual routes — morning depot rides, night services, extra rush-hour runs, and more.
To make this manageable, Tramola now includes a line overview plot in the familiar time–distance style.

Click individual routes to open and edit their details
Changes made to any route are instantly reflected in the overview
Filter routes by direction to focus on forward or backward trips

Transit Batch Edit

An overview plot is just half the deal — editing each route individually can still be tedious.
That’s why Tramola 25.2 introduces batch editing: transfer changes made to one route across multiple routes in your transport schedule.

Need to reroute all buses due to a roadblock? It now takes just a few clicks.

Difference Plots

Last but not least, a long-awaited feature has arrived: difference plots between simulation runs.
With the enhanced visualizer, you can now compare link volumes and other attributes across different runs.

We’re excited to announce the release of Tramola 25.1!
This version introduces a powerful editor for DRT scenario inputs, the ability to load and compare multiple simulation results in parallel, and major usability improvements to transit network route editing.

DRT Editor

Editing Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) scenarios is now easier than ever. Tramola now allows you to:

Create and adjust vehicles, stops, and service areas directly in the browser
Auto-generate vehicles and stops within a user-defined area or at selected locations
Remove or reposition elements with full control
Edit DRT-related config groups right in the config editor

These tools make designing DRT services faster, smoother, and more integrated into your workflow.

Compare Runs Side-by-Side

You can now visualize multiple runs in parallel using the same visualizer session.

Overlay different network or vehicle layers from distinct runs to:

Compare case studies in the same or different areas
Explore variations in link volumes, flow bundles, or congestion
Visually validate changes and assumptions in your experiments

This lays the groundwork for even more powerful comparison tools in future versions.

Improved Transit Route Editing

Designing transit line routes just got a lot smoother:

Link directions are now clearly visible
U-turns are highlighted with clear visual indicators
Appending vs. prepending to a route is now obvious and user-friendly

These enhancements help reduce errors and make it easier to build precise, well-defined transit routes.

More Visualization Options

The Tramola Visualizer now supports coloring vehicles by:

Mode of transport
Relative speed
Absolute speed

This makes it much easier to:

Spot emerging congestion patterns
Identify mode-specific issues

Creario – Quickly create MATSim scenarios world-wide

Simunto is very proud to announce the launch of Creario, a new service that allows you to quickly and easily create MATSim scenarios world-wide.

Creating a good MATSim model is a challenge for anyone. Simunto has been working on a solution for this for years and we are excited to share it with you.

Based on a number of open datasets with world-wide coverage, Creario uses Simunto’s model generation pipeline to automatically generate MATSim scenarios. The generated scenarios feature the following characteristics:

Detailed multi-modal network with numerous advanced link-attributes, optionally also for cycling and walking
Public transport schedule, mapped to the network for high-fidelity visualizations and simulations
Facilities, used for high-resolution location choice
Population data with detailed attributes and behavior patterns

The service is available as a simple-to-use web application, where users can select their region of interest, set parameters for the model, and optionally upload custom data to further increase the quality of the model.

Via 25.1 released

Via 25.1 is finally available. The new version does not only include numerous improved and new features, but provides auto-update functionality and a signed and notarized executable on macOS for a much improved experience.

New and improved features

Filter Link Volumes and Average Speeds for specific modes

Calculating the average link volumes and speeds until now just took all vehicles into account. But what if you only want the link volumes of freight vehicles or bicycles? In the new Via version, it is possible to filter for specific modes when calculating the average link volumes and speeds.

Export Link Attributs as CSV

Link attributs can now be exported as CSV, including time-dependent attribute values.

Support new Counts format from MATSim

MATSim’s new counts_v2 format allows storing count values for different modes like private cars, freight trucks and bicycles. In addition, values are no longer restricted to 1-hour time slots, but support other time windows as well. Via supports the new file format fully, allowing to select for which mode counts should be compared.

Map Backgrounds

Via contains an updated list of map backgrounds, especially a few with reduced labels and colors, making them well-suited for data visualization. Light and dark variants of the maps are available to gather to all visualization needs.

The new version also supports loading Map Backgrounds with transparent background, allowing for custom map overlays.

New Build system with auto-update of Via

Part of the reason why the new Via version took a bit longer than expected is a completely new build system. As operating systems advance, they require more and more features from applications to nice integrate. Especially on macOS, applications need to be cryptographically signed and tested by Apple (“notarized”) in order to be executable without restrictions.

In order to fulfill those requirements, we had to make various changes to how we package our code to be run as a double-clickable executable. But those changes also offered some opportunities: The new versions of Via are now able to automatically update once a new version becomes available, improving the user-experience enormously.

We hope that with those changes in place, new versions of Via with added and improved features can again be rolled out more frequently in the future.

Other Improvements

Save screenshots as SVG
NetworkLayer supports the origgeom attribute from SupersonicOsmNetworkReader for detailed geometries.
Stuck Agents analysis now allows to create IdSets of stuck agents or vehicles.
GEH analysis of Counts did not include all counting stations.
Custom WMS map settings were not stored between sessions.
Time-dependent aggregation in the Aggregator and OD Aggregator layers did not properly update when the time changed.
Don’t crash loading a population file referencing facilities without facilities being loaded.

We are proud to announce the availability of the newest version of Tramola. The main feature of the new version are brand new map-based visualizations, where the outputs of MATSim runs can be displayed and queried in an engaging visual manner.

Map-Based Visualization

Powerful network visualizations

Tramola allows you to use arbitrary link attributes to style your network visualization. It supports a variety of color ramps and can automatically design color assignments to attribute values. Alternatively, users have the option to manually configure colors and widths in a very detailed way if a need for highly customized visualizations exists.

Customizable travel demand analysis

Tramola currently provides time-dependent link volumes and an interactive select link analysis (sometimes also called flow-bundle analysis). Customizable filtering options allow to visualize link volumes only for a sub-set of trips, e.g. trips with a travel-time longer than 30 minutes, or trips of agents older than 50 years (provided your scenario contains such attributes).

Vehicle visualization

What would a MATSim visualization be without moving vehicles? Tramola has you covered with a selection of different vehicles styles to choose from.

Clearly, the visualization capabilities are still limited when compared to Via, but rest assured that we plan to continuously extend and enhance the visualization capabilities of Tramola.

New and improved features

Scenario Editor: Edit network routes of public transport lines

Tramola now provides the possibility to map a transit route to the network to explicitly specify along which links transit vehicles run to serve all stops of a transit route.

Scenario Editor: Support custom link attributes

The network editing in the Scenario Editor now allows to edit arbitrary link attributes, and even add new ones.

Support for MATSim 2024.0

Tramola now supports the latest version of MATSim, 2024.0. Especially the Configuration editor was adapted to support the renamed config modules and parameters.

Improved usability of Dashboards

We simplified the creation and configuration of Dashboards. The addition of data tables in dashboards and the possibility to view dashboard-content in full-screen help make best use of the powerful features.

Via 24.1 released

We are happy to announce the immediate availability of Via 24.1. The new version brings much faster events loading along with improved movie recording, new transit analyses, and more options to display map backgrounds.

New and improved features

Much faster Events loading

Loading data from MATSim’s events files, e.g. for Vehicles and Agents layer, is now much faster and typically takes 20-40% less time.

Public Transport

The public transport plugin includes 2 major new analyses. The first one provides access to delays of transit vehicles arriving and departing at stops. The second provides detailed information about how long agents are waiting at stops. In addition, the stop query was enhanced to show all custom attributes in the Attributes panel, and the search by name is now less strict, providing easier access to specific stops.

Movie Recording

We did a major overhaul of the movie recording in Via. As a result, we now include the OpenH264 encoder, providing much faster and better movie encoding in the mp4 / H.264 format. In addition, Via can now also produce VP9 and AV1 encoded movies. Both formats, VP9 and AV1, are generally considered to be better and more efficient (smaller files with better visual quality) than the mp4 encoding, but especially the AV1 encoder is also much slower.

Map Backgrounds

Via already provides a number of differently styles map backgrounds, and users can add custom map styles from their own map providers. But now Via allows to modify existing map styles by converting them to grayscale, or change saturation and contrast to create optimal visualizations.

Other Improvements

Support the new facilities_v2.dtd from MATSim.
Create Agents-Layer from a population without x- and y-coordinates, but with facility ids
Network-Layer now provides z-coordinates as custom attribute
Legend allows customization of font and font-size
Ruler: Measuring distances sometimes used a wrong font size to display the measurement

Mobility Impact Analyzer for Volkswagen Group and MOIA

Running a large number of MATSim simulations produces a significant amount of data. However, how can you best extract key insights from all the simulation output?

Simunto has developed the Mobility Impact Analyzer (MIA) for Volkswagen Group and MOIA, providing a solution to ingest extensive mobility simulation outputs and present the data in a clean, interactive interface for detailed analysis.

MIA’s Features:

Interactive Interface: The platform offers an intuitive and interactive interface that allows users to explore simulation data in detail.
Map Display: The centerpiece of MIA is a map display that can show both aggregated values and individual vehicle data.
Filtering and Aggregation: Users can filter and aggregate data to work out key performance indicators (KPIs) or compare results from one or multiple simulations.
Attractive Visualization: MIA enables findings to be presented in an attractive user interface, making it easier to communicate results effectively.
